Former Stable behind The Talbot

Stable, now store. Earlier C19, altered. Walls of cobble with red brick corners, some red brick bands to the gable wall and red brick surrounds to the openings; slate roof. Rectangular plan parallel to street. Two storeys and probably 4 structural bays, with a doorway in the centre, a large circular pitching hole above this, a small segmental-headed window to the right of the doorway and another doorway at the right-hand end. Included as a good example of local cobble-walled building, very few of which have survived.

Former stable to rear of Talbot Hotel, South Clifton Street 

This is a rare survival of a cobble building and reputedly the oldest building in Lytham. It is in good condition, and is not painted over, although altered. The corners are of brick and the openings have brick surrounds. There is some decorative home-made brick (in bands) in the gable end wall. There are two storeys, with a circular pitching hole, for access to the loft from a cart.

It could have been part of a farm which previously occupied the site, and later used as stabling for the inn. The vernacular style of the building and its decoration were typical of the area in the late 18th/early 19th century. Sadly, agricultural buildings have been respected even less than the old cottages and they are very rare indeed.
