The Clifton Arms Hotel was first erected in about 1794 on Clifton Street, in the space that is now Park Street and adjoining buildings. Its successor, (a two storey building) was built in 1840 on West Beach. In 1875 all buildings comprising the hotel were raised to the same height and sold on to a private company.
Clifton Arms Hotel, West Beach
Built in 1839, in an imposing classical style, this remains the premier hotel in the area. The original building consisted of the five bays to the left of the building as seen today. The four-window extension was added in the later nineteenth century. The centre of the original five-bay range has an unusual full height open-pedimented stone porch. Although the door has been altered, the original cast-iron balconies at the first and second floors remain. In the pediment above is the name and the Clifton arms, with the hand-and-dagger emblem.
