Although Lytham wasn't deliberately bombed in WWII a number of air raid shelters were built. They were never needed as the only bomb that fell in Lytham was on Green Drive golf course and the hole that it made was left to become a pond. The shelters tended not to be marked on maps and for some no pictures exist. They tended to still exist in the post war years and those of us who were youngsters then probably played around them.
- The one at the hospital wasn't very substantial. It seemed to have just been a curved structure with an iron from and covered in earth. It stood alongside the the entrance from Preston Road.
- Park View shelter was used for many years as a changing room at the entrance to the playing fields.
- The one in Robin Park was later used as an electricity sub-station.
- A pair at the cricket club were domed concrete structures.
- There was a Air raid shelter at the back of Arnold Rd & Oswald Rd.
- One by Eastham Hall gas works.
There were existing buildings that were also designated as places to shelter.
- The underground toilets in Lytham Square.
- Lytham Baths.
Part of air raid precautions was to have fire watchers stationed in various places, one of these being up in the top of the Market Hall.
The map below shows where they were located and there are no doubt some still to be recorded here. So if there are some missing, do let us know and let us have any pictures you may have.
