Air raid shelters - Ansdell/Fairhaven

Although Ansdell/Fairhaven wasn't deliberately bombed in WWII a number of air raid shelters were built.  The shelters tended not to be marked on maps and for some no pictures exist. They tended to still exist in the post war years and those of us who were youngsters then probably played around them.

  • King Edward school removed to build the KES/QMS dining hall in 1950. Some pupils stayed at school overnight fire watching and to tackle any small fires that broke out.
  • Queen Mary school at the back alongside the path to KES
  • Shelter to the rear of 119 Rossall Road, Ansdell in the back street.
  • On Lansdowne Road behind Ansdell primary school

The map below shows where they were located and there are no doubt some still to be recorded here. So if there are some missing, do let us know and let us have any pictures you may have.
