The LHG logo

The master copy of the logo is a multi-layer image which makes it easy to produce a variety of versions to support various environments. Contact Phil if you need one for a particular purpose although you are highly recommended to use on of the ones below.

The original logo is hand drawn/painted and whilst we have a scan of it, we do not have the original media. The appearance though has a number of problems as it isn't symmetric, it is fuzzy in places, the colours aren't distinct and there are there are quite a number of gaps where the background colours don't quite meet the boundaries. So the best of the scanned images was used as a basic to convert it into a multi layered image correcting the faults and trying to keep the image as close to the original possible. Some small changes were made such as reducing the number of vertical lines behind the shield and lining up the icons within the shield. This is what appears below under the heading Large.

Whilst the appearance was significantly improved, we soon realised that when it compressed down to a small size such as for adding to posters or within computer applications that required a small image it wasn't always easy to read. This was the result of the vertical lines behind the shield becoming a in effect a grey area which distracted the eye, and the fact that the height/width was 3x2 which resulted in the lower part being rather compressed making the name hard to read. So additional layers were added to use in small images.

  • Half of the vertical lines were removed and doubled in thickness which kept them visible and eliminated the grey problem.
  • A half sized version of the hand/dagger was created which reduced the height and brought the image nearer to a square. This meant the lower part of the logo was wider and the lettering much easier to see.
  • The 1987 at the bottom was originally bronze in colour and this was hard to read on small images and so a red text layer was added and that makes the bottom more distinct.

That seems to have significantly improved things when a small version of the icon is required and improved its visibility. There is though a slightly different problem when the logo is added to posters. It looks fine when placed on a placed background but gets lost when placed over something darker and busy when used with a transparent background. Some users don't like having it within a white rectangular box. So a layer has been created to provide an off-white background that more closely follows the shape of the logo thus providing some colour contrast making the logo much more visible without the need for a larger rectangular pale background.

Other sizes/styles

Large 1900 x 3210

This size is the one to use on large banners, flags etc.

  1. The image above with a transparent background.
  2. We also have a monochrome outline of the logo to use when the coloured version is not appropriate.
Medium

These are the ones suitable to use within documents and can be reduced in size to fit the space being used.

  1. Small hand/dagger transparent background 510x684
  2. Small hand/dagger shaped background 518x684. The background shape is not apparent when viewed here as the normal background is also white. To see it follow the link then view just the image in a new tab. This the best one for labelling posters.
  3. Large hand/dagger transparent background 378x640.
  4. Large hand/dagger shaped background 416x684. The wording is less distinctive than on the one with the small hand/dagger as the total image is taller. So the small hand/dagger is the better version to use.
  5. Small hand/dagger monochrome 505 x 684.
Small

These are more specialised in particular for use in computer applications where there is restricted space and aspect ratio where a some parts need to be restricted so that our name stands out more clearly.

  1. a small coloured version with a transparent background
  2. a small coloured version with small hand and dagger, less hatching and a transparent background
  3. a small coloured version without the hatching with a transparent background
  4. a small version of the outline
  5. a small square image without the hand and dagger useful in computer applications that only provide a small square box to provide an image
  6. A long thin image with our name and logo.
