A favourite part of a walk down the promenade is to go down the jetty, depending of course on the state of the tide. The jetty was built to make it easier to get to boats moored along the shore and especially for fishermen.
The jetty was originally nearer to the windmill and was shorter as the river is much closer to the promenade there. It was probably moved around the time the mussel tanks were built.
It has to be periodically refurbished as it is underwater twice day and the wood deteriorates. Over time the foreshaw has increased in height so it has been made higher when that was necessary.
